VIPA welcomes MEPs decision to boost energy efficiency

VIPA International welcomes the vote of the ITRE Committee of the European Parliament on the Energy Efficiency Directive that took place on 28 November. VIPA International strongly believes in the energy efficiency first principle, and therefore is particularly satisfied by the inclusion of this principle in the directive.

In particular, the approval of the binding 40% energy efficiency target by 2030 with national binding targets represent an important indication for the industry as a whole to invest and develop new solutions and technologies to reduce energy consumption. Vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) represent an optimum solution in this sense, offering best-in-class insulation solutions to reduce the energy consumption of buildings and appliances.

VIPA International is also satisfied by the reinforcement of the exemplary role that government will have to take with the renovation of the buildings owned and occupied by national authorities. Finally, the 1.5 energy savings obligation for the post-2020 period is an important confirmation of the need to ensure continuity to the commitments of national governments.

The President of VIPA International, Gregor Erbenich, highlighted that “the VIP industry as a whole can be satisfied with the proposal of the ITRE Committee of the European Parliament. Deep renovation and the use of best available technologies should become the norm in the European Union, and this proposal is a step in the right direction with the recognition of the energy efficiency first principle and the 2030 40% binding target. Ambitious energy efficiency targets are extremely important to further develop the European market for highly efficient, space saving solutions as VIPs”.

VIPA International is now looking forward to the Plenary vote on the report and the following trialogue negotiations between EU institutions, calling for an ambitious agreement between parties to ensure that the energy efficiency first principle will become a building block of the EU energy policy.
