Liveable space should be included as macro-objective in the JRC ‘Efficient Buildings’ study
Liveable floor area and efficient utilization of space are included in the Working Paper 1 of the ongoing study on Resource Efficiency for the Building Sector only as additional macro-objectives for later potential identification of indicators. The Vacuum Insulation Panel Association (VIPA International) therefore recommend the development of indicators for the macro-objectives B7a (Productive workplace), B7b (Liveable and decent homes) and S2 (Efficient utilisation and high occupancy).
The study by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission is surely a good opportunity to assess the environmental performance of buildings and guarantee the proper use of resources. However, it currently fails to take properly into account liveable space and useful floor area.
Besides, it will be important to ensure a proper integration of these indicators with the Environmental Product Declarations, to avoid duplications leading to the creation of excessive and unnecessary burdens to the industry.
Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) are high efficient insulation materials, offering top class insulation performances in a reduced space. VIPs can be used in new and refurbished buildings where space is an issue but the architect, designer or builder will not compromise on insulation properties. The website of VIPA International includes several case studies showing different applications of VIPs in the building sector.
